Monthly Challenges

Duolingo, 2021

Gamifying long-term goals for language learners

Monthly Challenges

(About)

Monthly Challenges offers themed competitions to help learners set and achieve goals while practicing regularly. Each month, participants can take on a new challenge and earn exclusive badges to mark their progress.

In my role as design lead, I guided the creation of this feature from an initial idea to the launch of the MVP. Our aim was to support Duolingo learners in staying motivated over longer periods of time and help them enjoy making strides towards their language learning objectives.

(Outcome)

The Monthly Challenges MVP launch was the best performing experiment for user retention since 2019, and increased the amount of time users spent learning by over 2 million minutes a day overall. More importantly, it has created a great foundation for experimenting with various progress tracking mechanics and has provided a place for highlighting Duolingo’s beloved characters.
